Marietta City Schools – A.L. Burruss Elementary
Achieves IB Candidate Status

MARIETTA, GA - A.L. Burruss Elementary received notification on May 5, 2014, from International Baccalaureate (IB) that it will be recognized as a candidate school for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) as of September 1, 2014. The school seeks to achieve full authorization and join a distinguished group of schools that offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP).

It is with great anticipation that I look forward to A.L. Burruss becoming a fully authorized IB elementary school and joining Sawyer Road Elementary in offering such an internationally respected program,” said Marietta City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Emily Lembeck. “We are one of very few school districts in the country to offer the full IB continuum for grades K-12 and this expansion adds to the distinctive opportunities we offer district students and families.”

“A.L. Burruss students currently benefit from a strong instructional program led by a dedicated, professional staff. Implementation of the IB PYP will augment students’ preparation as the school strives to meet its Mission: To develop every child as an educated, responsible citizen for a changing world,” expressed Julie King, principal of A.L. Burruss Elementary.

The A.L. Burruss School Governance Team (SGT) actively researched the benefits of the IB PYP throughout the 2012-2013 school year and voted on March 20, 2014, to submit an application for candidacy. The PYP is one of three programs offered by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).
